Design a Picture Book Character using the Peanut Method
What we will do:
After reading one of Briana’s picture books, students will work in a four page booklet that Briana provides. This project is tailored to each grade level.
Briana will lead the students through a a visual pre-writing brianstorm called “Peanut Animals.” Briana created this method of designing in the second grade!
This activity is designed to encourage working in drafts to create a final project.
Timing:

Create a Sable Island Horse Puppet
What we will do:
After reading “She Dreams of Sable Island” students will construct their own Sable Island horse puppet using a cut out provided by Briana. Students will look at the types of horses on Sable Island and make their puppet using creative colouring.
This activity is designed to encourage risk taking with a variety of supplied materials.

Create a Selkie Seal Puppet
What we will do:
After reading “The Book of Selkie” students will create their own selkie-seal puppet. Students will colour-in the provided pieces, and follow along to assemble the puppet using paper fasteners.
This activity is designed to encourage risk taking with a variety of supplied materials.

A Day on Sable Island
What we will do:
Briana will take students to Sable Island for a day in this dynamic presentation. Follow Briana as she journeys to Sable Island, visits the wild horses, seals, and plant life. Using her picture book “She Dreams of Sable Island “ as a frame work, students will experience a fact-packed presentation that touches on science, social studies, math and Nova Scotian history. Briana will explain how her fictional picture book is inspired by non-fiction information she learned about this wild island off the coast of Nova Scotia.
At the end of the presentation, Briana will lead students through a quick drawing activity to learn how to draw a Sable Island Horse. (hand out included.)
Time:

Grade Primary-4
Create a Flying Bird from Wildflower
Briana will read her picture book “Wildflower.” After the story, Briana will lead students through a collaborative art project that explores the theme of the book. Students will create a swallow bird puppet. The puppet can hang, and can be part of a classroom mobile, then each student can take home their own bird.

1 hr.
