Art & Studio FAQ
Will you illustrate my self published book?
Unfortunately I am not taking any self published projects at the moment. Thank you for thinking of me for your project.
Will you help me submit my book to a publisher ?
You don’t need me to help you! If you visit the publisher’s website, they will have instructions on how to submit the manuscript. If you are interested in my work as an illustrator for your book, you can put my name forward if they ask your preference of an illustrator. You do not need to ask me ahead of time! The editor and art directors will make the best decisions for your project, and contact me themselves. I do not have any influence over this process.
Will you help me with my instagram/social media?
Unfortunately I cannot at this time. There are lots of free online resources, but my best advice is to be authentic to yourself and your work, and only share what you are comfortable. You do not have to “make work for instagram,” just show who you are as an artist, what you like to do, your process, and art that makes you happy, on a timeline that makes you happy. That is my best advice and what I try to practice! I think if you take the pressure off yourself, and stop comparing yourself to others it can be fun and your art will attract viewers naturally.
Will you teach me how to make a repeat pattern?
There are so many you tube tutorials on this! Skill Share is a great resource as well. You can learn how if you spend some time playing around with it. You cannot skip the step of digging in and making mistakes. I have my own way of creating repeats that is a combination of analog and digital. Get to know photoshop or illustrator and give it a try with a free tutorial.
Will you paint my pet/ child / family /house?
Occasionally I take on these types of projects on a case by case basis, depending on my current work load, and my connection to the project. You can send me an email, brianacorrscott@gmail.com.
Will you give me advice on how to become an artist/writer?
All the advice I have is to work hard at your art at least a little bit everyday. I subscribe to the idea of setting a goal and working towards that goal in steps. I don’t have any short cuts around this, but I sure wish I did! I think if you love what you do, and it is authentically from your heart, you will find a path to your goals. I believe art is a bit like exercise. It’s important to practice, and increase difficulty slowly…and stick to a routine. I have a series of talks on instagram under my IGTV tab, please take a look.
Do you have a brick and mortar store?
Not at this time. I have a home studio where I work. I have lots of stockists that carry my work.
How do you print your products?
If you visit my blog or instagram, I have a resource:a series of videos on how to reproduce your art. it’s called “Shop Talk!” Here is the link.
What surface do you paint on? What is your medium?
I work on Yupo paper, from Legion Paper Co. and paint in gouache and oils. My full process is here.
What type of brushes do you use?
Craft brushes bought at Michaels and the dollar store. I destroy brushes. I have a couple really nice sable ones I save for certain washes when using watercolour. Other than that they are cheap cheap ones. Read about my process here.
Can I come to your studio?
You can visit my studio by appointment only to shop original paintings. I will not give advice on art making if you make a studio appointment. If you sign up for my newsletter, I have occasional “open studio” days, which is a good day to come if you are just curious! Also, be sure to look at this photo shoot for “In Her Studio” magazine.
